Description | In this hybrid performance/academic course, students developed a repertoire of traditional ("old time") Appalachian dance music and country song. Students learned to play by ear through participating in weekly music sessions. They also completed listening and reading assignments (primary and secondary sources), and wrote four essays that drew on these assignments. Additionally, students conducted research and wrote a short essay on a tune or song of their choice. Midway through the semester, students were divided into bands (trios): they selected repertoire, rehearsed outside of class, and then performed in a formal, end-of-semester concert. Prior experience with old time music was not expected, but a basic working knowledge of their instrument was required as well as a a willingness to practice both individually and as part of their trio outside of class. |
