Description | In this course, students read and tried their hand at different types of music writing, including album and live music reviews, memoir, and literary non-fiction. Our reading and listening covered a broad range of styles, including rock/pop, rap, R&B, jazz, folk/traditional music, country, and western classical music. In addition to learning basic music terminology and concepts to strengthen how we communicate about music, we learned about "deep listening" with respect to the music itself -- lyrical analysis, structure, style, and performance. In this writing intensive course, students completed three major writing assignments that variously included proposal writing, outlining main arguments, first draft (writing and editing), and the final essay. Students workshopped their writing in class and completed reading and listening assignments and short written responses. At the end of the semester, students chose a piece of music, analyzed it musically, structurally, and lyrically, and shared their work in an oral presentation. |
