Description | This course focused on the broad fundamentals of western music theory and literacy. We studied concepts such as pitch, melody, timbre, and texture, and learned about rhythm, intervals, scales, chords, and harmony. We also developed our musical understanding through composing music and through "deep listening" in class work and at concerts. In addition to weekly homework sets, students composed three original pieces with a partner. Students also attended two concerts and wrote reports -- the first on an in-class piano recital, the second on a local western classical or jazz performance of their choosing. In addition to attending a weekly ear training class, students also took three evaluations over the course of the semester. No prior music training or literacy was required or presupposed for this course. |
