Description

There are processes designers in the theatre must undertake to realize the physical world of a play. Within the performing arts, no single aspect of design exists in isolation and no designer should fly solo. Moving through a series of individual and group exercises, students began to develop their own processes toward expressing the passion of a theatre work through their designs. Throughout the semester, students developed their design vocabulary that allowed for collaboration and interplay, while producing unified and coherent design work. This semester particular emphasis was placed on scenic and costume design. Students were introduced to the tools of design communication: drafting (Vectorworks), models, rendering, etc. as they learned to discuss and to respond to performance works. Students read and discussed articles by scenic and costume designers, made submissions to a design/image collection, and completed two design projects: a scenic design for the Morriseau’s Pipeline and either a costume design or scenic design for Silverman’s The Moors. Keywords:Theater, Scenery, Costumes, Design
