Description | This course involved a detailed study of the Japanese cinema. It highlighted works in the dramatic narrative, documentary and experimental traditions. The films screened used the past to explore the meaning of the present, examined the relationships within families, investigated formal issues in cinematic construction and attempted to articulate broader social issues within Japanese society. Participants were asked to complete weekly written responses to films and corresponding readings, a midterm paper, plus a final project based on class discussions, film screenings, and assigned readings. |
