Description | This course explored China's modern political history since the beginning of the 20th century through the lens of popular culture. It surveyed different forms of popular culture, such as festival celebrations, theater, propaganda posters, film, sports, advertisement, fashion, music, and social media, with a focus on the relationship between culture, revolution, and power. In this course, students studied individual forms of popular culture in historical context, analyzed the interaction between Chinese popular culture and global forces, researched its connection with political ideology, examined its social and psychological impacts, and tried to define popular culture in modern China. This course was to help the students learn modern Chinese history through the lenses of popular culture, such as festival celebration, fashion and food. Students were asked to explore the social economic and political factors affecting the trends of popular culture in China. The required the reading materials, the reflection papers, presentations and final research paper demanded students engaging in an analytical learning process. |
