Description | This course surveyed the vast field of psychology from a critical perspective, problematizing and inquiring about psychological methods, practices, and philosophical assumptions with the intent of coming to understand how psychology has come to be such a potent and undetectable sociopolitical force. By inquiring about how psychological knowledge shapes and defines how we come to self-understanding and what we believe it means to be properly human, we explored how these understandings support or challenge existing arrangements of power and privilege. Psychology and the mental health disciplines, along with their myriad forms of inquiry and intervention, are inextricably entangled with current social and political arrangements. Evaluations for this course were based upon the level of engagement demonstrated by the student throughout the semester and as evidenced by completion of the following required work: a weekly one-page written response to the assigned readings, one short essay, a midterm paper and a final paper or project for a total of 20-25 pages of writing. Students were also required to facilitate a class discussion based on assigned readings. Completion of these assignments demonstrated satisfactory mastery of the course material. |
