Description

This is an introductory course for students who would like to explore their documentary practice. Through a combination of screenings, lectures, readings, and technical workshops, we will explore a critical/historical overview of this genre and incorporate our knowledge and experience to produce individual or collaborative projects in a variety of what Bill Nichols calls  "modes of representation." Students were given the option to work individually or in small groups to conceive and produce, either one semester-long project or several short films demonstrating a specific mode of representation. Weekly written responses to the screenings and corresponding assigned readings were considered an integral part of the curriculum.
