Description

This course was designed to give students a better understanding of the diverse ways that scientists study the relationship between wealth and health. We started by analyzing data showing connections between poverty, inequalities, and health on local, group, national and global levels. We then focused on primary studies that aimed to better understand the processes by which poverty and the degree of inequality in wealth are causally linked to different measures of health and quality of life. Students explored specific measures of health and disease and specific ways that poverty and inequality “get under the skin" including via diet, pollution, racism, and stress. The main project for this course was a review of the scientific literature on a focused question.
