Description

This course offered an overview of the theoretical tenets of experiential education and how they can be applied in a variety of settings, including alternative and traditional classrooms and the outdoors. Topics addressed included current issues in experiential education, oppression and empowerment in education, teaching experientially, creative expression, and the historical and philosophical basis of experiential education. The course format included readings, discussion, field experiences, and individual research and presentations on experiential education. An emphasis of the course was on student directed facilitation and teaching and each student created curriculum and taught sections to the entire class.  The final project was a well conceived and orchestrated workshop on "What is Experiential Education?" hosted by the class for the Hampshire/Five College community.
