| Description | This seminar served Division III and other upper-level students pursuing independent research projects in dance/movement studies. In class, we surveyed in broad strokes the terrain of dance studies to register past and current interests and debates, and examined the publishing protocols of major dance journals. We also considered administrative structures and systems of power impacting dance in higher education, and imagined the future of dance studies. Students examined different modes of dance scholarship by reading chapters from Researching Dance: Evolving Modes of Inquiry, edited by Fraleigh and Hanstein. The class also met with the research librarian to sharpen bibliographic research skills, and students working on choreographic projects participated in the Five College Dance Department’s all-day workshop on production. Students presented drafts of their evolving projects in class, submitted mid-term annotated bibliographies of artistic/scholarly/other resources to inform, challenge and situate their artistic and scholarly work, and completed drafts of their Division III written work, or reports on their independent research projects. |
