| Description | This was a project-based intermediate-level dance composition course in which students put theory into practice by fully developing a dance for performance in the February concert. The focus was on working with multiple dancers, in longer works (minimum three dancers, four minutes). Students conceived the dance’s gestalt, designed and conducted auditions, cast dancers, composed original movement, revised sequences, directed rehearsals, designed/secured sound, costumes, and the final concert’s program order. In class students were introduced to classical and contemporary compositional structures for group work; explored strategies for generating new material; discussed best practices for working with their dancers (teaching, directing, coaching); considered issues in costuming, music, publicity, working with a light designer, and concert management. Out of class they rehearsed at least six hours per week, viewed dances of their choice weekly to add to their dance literacy, and completed production assignments (publicity, program, artist statements, CEL-1 dancer evaluations). In early spring term they will hold final rehearsals and work 40+ hours in the theater during the performance week of the final concert. |
