Description

In this course, we learned how to produce music pieces for public radio, including the basics of reporting, recording, scriptwriting, editing, production, and the effective use of music and ambient sound. Students produced three music-related pieces: a two-minute vox pop, a 2-3 minute review of a single song, and a 4-6 minute documentary feature in a style consistent with public radio. Students learned how to write project proposals ("pitches") and were required to rewrite one or more drafts after being edited. Students also gained a working knowledge of sound editing techniques using ProTools. In addition to regularly workshopping their projects in class, students completed weekly reading and listening assignments that introduced them to creative public radio pieces that focused on music. Students also selected and listened to different types of public radio programming and wrote four critical listening essays about the production techniques they heard. Evaluations are based on the quality of their three audio projects, critical listening essays, and project proposals as well as willingness to learn from and be engaged with the back-and-forth editing process that is at the heart of journalism.
