Description

In this advanced seminar, we explored the location, use and changing nature of media in places like houses, automobiles, airports, schools and stores. Some of this investigation was historical -- say, where and how the radio was used in 1930s homes -- and some focused on the present day, when media are increasingly mobile, personal and infrastructural. Students specialized in media in a particular place and conducted a semester-long study of that site, making an oral presentation at the end of term. Meetings were organized around the close discussion of texts, some selected by students and others by the instructor. Students were expected to participate actively at our meetings.
