Description

In HACU 0202 Rocking the Boat, Shaping the Vote, Making Media for Democracy, students studied historic and contemporary examples of international advertising and media works produced for political groups and social movements as they made media for change and transformation.  Students analyzed works created by corporations, collectives, and artists and used this knowledge to create work of their own. Our workflow incorporated research and development of an idea, production, editing and revision. Students completed annotated bibliographies and gave oral presentations about their area of focus. The final work of the course was created in conversation with the US presidential elections of 2016, or an international, national, or local issue or movement such as gun control, reproductive justice, Black Lives Matter. We used small group peer review and the Critical Response Process, a guided method for critique, to structure and deepen our conversations of work in progress. Required weekly screenings included American ads, international feature films, community media, artist film and video, and social media.
