Description | Film I introduces the basic skills of film production, including camera work, film processing, editing, and preparation and completion of a finished work using 16mm black and white negative film. Students submit written responses to screenings of films that represent a variety of aesthetic approaches to the moving image. A series of filmmaking assignments culminates in an individual final project for the class. The development of personal vision is stressed. The bulk of the work in the class draws on the material of 16mm. Camera-less techniques, direct animation, and alternative approaches to image design and acquisition as well as non-linear editing are introduced. The class devoted significant time to screen and discuss works in progress and used the Critical Response Process, a guided method for critique, to structure and deepen these conversations. The prerequisite for this course is a 100-level course in media art such as Introduction to Media Arts, Hampshire Media Arts, or equivalent. |
